چکیده

There are two well-known phenomena associated with the bainite reaction, both of which have been exploited here to enhance the mechanical behaviour of steel. Firstly, the bainite plate size decreases as the transformation temperature is reduced. Secondly, it is bad to have large regions of untransformed austenite in the microstructure; this is because they can transform, under the influence of external stress, into corresponding large regions of untempered, brittle martensite. By adopting a two-stage heat treatment in which coarse bainite is produced by isothermal transformation at a high temperature, followed by isothermal transformation at a lower temperature, it has been possible to eliminate blocks of austenite. This induces a microstructure containing an organized dispersion of fine plates of bainitic ferrite in the regions between the coarse plates. The mechanical properties of this mixture are shown to be better than those of bainite obtained by transformation at any single temperature. The experiments have been conducted in the context of very strong steels, where the strength and hardness can exceed 2.5GPa and 650 HV respectively.

Promoting the Coalescence of Bainite Platelets

An experiment is presented which succeeds for the first time in stimulating the formation of coarse plates of bainite by the coalescence of identically oriented individual platelets. Transformation under the influence of a tensile stress dramatically promotes the formation of the coalesced bainite by increasing the probability of growing parallel platelets in close proximity. Whereas the coarse...

Designing low carbon, low temperature bainite

The possibility of producing bainite at low temperatures by suppressing transformation using substitutional solutes has been investigated, as an alternative to using large carbon concentrations to achieve the same purpose. It is found that although transformation temperatures can indeed be suppressed in this way, the difference between the bainite and martensite start temperatures diminishes. T...

Bainite: Fragmentation of crystallographically homogeneous domains

It becomes possible in appropriate circumstances for similarly oriented plates of bainite or martensite to merge and form coarse crystallographically homogeneous domains whose presence leads to a deterioration in mechanical properties. A method is presented here for breaking up such domains, by introducing very small scale chemical composition variations in the austenite prior to its transforma...

Bainite transformation kinetics Part 2 Non-uniform distribution of carbon

The carbon concentration trapped in films of austenite between parallel platelets of bainite is often found to be much larger than that in the larger blocks of austenite between sheaves of bainite. The effect of this non-uniform distribution of carbon on the overall transformation kinetics of bainite is examined theoretically. It is found that the trapping of carbon in the films of austenite ac...

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Austempering SUS440 Steel Thin Plates

SUS440 is a high-carbon stainless steel, and its martensite matrix has high heat resistance, high corrosion resistance, and high pressure resistance. It has been widely used in mechanical parts and critical materials. However, the SUS440 martempered matrix has reliability problems in thin plate applications and thus research uses different austempering heat treatments (tempering temperature: 20...
